“Religion is belief in someone else’s experience. Spirituality is having your own experience.” ~Deepak Chopra
I agree with this quote, as would my protagonist, Jesse, in The Ghosting of Gods. It’s the reason he wants knowledge, not faith. Knowledge can only come from within. Know Thyself is a much repeated piece of advice, right?
Knowing yourself could actually be a definition of “spirituality.” There’s no end to this knowing. That’s what gives it the flavor of eternity and divinity.
Psychology and spirituality intertwine and intrigue me. My next novel is turning out to be full of psychology. Since I like creepy stories, this is manifesting as lots of mental illness stuffing the scenes:-) And these weird statues…
Trailer for my novel The Ghosting of Gods by Burning Monk Productions! They were amazing guys to work with—reasonably priced and committed to giving me a quality product that was exactly what I wanted. I’m thrilled with the video. It’s pretty creepy! What do you think?

“Write only what you alone can write.” ~Elie Wiesel
I used to think it was important to write the sort of story that is popular, and to be careful about putting off a large group of readers, or offending them, by totally writing what came from me. I thought I needed to alter my writing to suit a large audience. I thought I shouldn’t do anything too weird. But now I think it’s absolutely critical, like a duty of the soul, to let MY TRUEST WRITING come out. That’s my responsibility. I believe in this way I offer an honest service to the world. I believe it’s the path of living a full, EXPRESSIVE life.
Those are powerful words, fellow authors, so let’s repeat them: Write only what you alone can write.
Note: This applies not only to writers. No matter what job you do, there is something unique and CREATIVE you bring to it. And so you must, if the world is to be an exciting, evolving place:)
“Dreaming is the day job of novelists, but sharing our dreams is a still more important task for us. We cannot be novelists without this sense of sharing something.” ~Haruki Murakami
This desire to share something is what forces the dreaming onto paper. It’s a way to make the dreams real, so that they can be shared. This introverted author is okay with the dreaming and the writing…but the marketing is confusing and uncomfortable. I’m doing it anyway. Because if no one reads my story, it feels like something terrible has happened. The personal enjoyment and satisfaction of writing is NOT enough.
I think everyone needs for their work to create a connection between themselves and others. It’s not just peculiar to writers.
“Work inspires inspiration. Keep working. If you succeed, keep working. If you fail, keep working. If you’re interested, keep working. If you’re bored, keep working.” ~Michael Crichton
Well, I’m keeping on working. Today was a productive day. I think I’ve created a good outline for my new project, another supernatural dystopian novel, of course. Exciting. I’m ready to slip into my protagonist’s voice and amplify this outline into a weird narrative… ~Cricket
I didn’t think I could love writing any novel as much as I did the first one. But this new ghostly story is coming alive day by day by day…and I DO love it as much…maybe even more? Let’s just say I’m present with it, so aware of it, appreciating every transformational character moment, every layered plot twist, every weird idea that comes to me…it’s freaking amazing. ~Cricket
“The authentic self is the best part of a human being. It’s the part of you that already cares, that is already passionate about evolution. When your authentic self miraculously awakens and becomes stronger than your ego, then you will truly begin to make a difference in this world. You will literally enter into a partnership with the creative principle.” ~Andrew Cohen
I call this the evolution of the next kind, and I’m very interested in it. For me, and for the world. All at once. ~Cricket
“So build yourself as beautiful as you want your world to be. Wrap yourself in light then give yourself away with your heart, your brush, your march, your art, your poetry, your play. And for every day you paint the war, take a week and paint the beauty, the color, the shape of the landscape you’re marching towards. Everyone knows what you’re against; show them what you’re for.” ~Andrea Gibson, Evolution
“Inside you there’s an artist you don’t know about… say yes quickly, if you know, if you’ve known it from before the beginning of the universe.” ~Rumi, poet
And hey, being an artist applies to everything…it means you recognize that Life flows and creates through you in a myriad of ways. It means you know that you are that Life. As an artist, expect your doing to be as amazing as your being. Expect it quickly, right now. ~Cricket
