“Inside you there’s an artist you don’t know about… say yes quickly, if you know, if you’ve known it from before the beginning of the universe.” ~Rumi, poet

And hey, being an artist applies to everything…it means you recognize that Life flows and creates through you in a myriad of ways. It means you know that you are that Life. As an artist, expect your doing to be as amazing as your being. Expect it quickly, right now. ~Cricket

“Start telling the stories that only you can tell, because there’ll always be better writers than you and there’ll always be smarter writers than you. There will always be people who are much better at doing this or doing that—but you are the only you… There are better writers than me out there, there are smarter writers, there are people who can plot better—there are all those kinds of things, but there’s nobody who can write a Neil Gaiman story like I can.”  ~Neil Gaiman

This is totally true. It applies to anything you want to do with your life, not just writing. Whatever you like to do, you will do it with your own personal flair. IF you let your peculiar self go free. There’s unity, and there’s individuality. Both are awesome. ~Cricket

stop the words now

open the window in the center of your chest

and let the spirits fly in and out

This bit of Rumi poetry was posted today on tumblr by Lazy Yogi. I reblogged and added:

Oh, I DO like this. As a writer, in my mind I changed the first line to: “Wait for the words now…”  My practice as a writer is to first intentionally open up, feel appreciation and happiness…and when I get that familiar expansive, flowing feeling in my chest (Read from Rumi: “open the window in the center of your chest and let the spirits fly in and out), I go ahead and write. Those spirits fly in and out, giving me ideas:) They really do!

“Words have a magical power. They can bring either the greatest happiness or deepest despair; they can transfer knowledge from teacher to student; words enable the orator to sway his audience and dictate its decisions. Words are capable of arousing the strongest emotions and prompting all men’s actions.” ~Sigmund Freud

Take words and combine them into a novel, and it’s even more powerful, even more magical. ~Cricket

“What will be left of all the fearing and wanting associated with your problematic life situation that every day takes up most of your attention? A dash–one or two inches long, between the date of birth and date of death on your gravestone.

To the egoic self, this is a depressing thought. To you, it is liberating.”  ~Eckhart Tolle

From the time I was a child, I’ve always been extraordinarily drawn to graveyards and found them to be PEACEFUL…and this quote from Eckhart perfectly explains why. All the stories of the ego drop away in death, and not only is that okay with me, it feels like freedom. This is why it’s really really not so weird that I’m a novelist who combines the ghostly with the spiritual. The two naturally go together:) ~Cricket
